Welcome to Slughorne Journal

Literature is a funny thing. Literature is something that can carry the weighty words of morality or the provocative ideas of revolutionaries, something that can set us free or bring us back down to Earth, something that can hold all of these things and more, in one neatly bound object. And there are few other things in the world that can make us simultaneously so ecstatic and so unhappy. There are many things to be said about studying this elusive thing known as literature, but one of them is not that it is boring. This isn’t to say that books can’t be boring- I’d be willing to bet we’ve all read a book that moved us to tears, and not in a good way- but even the most ponderous work of literature has something valuable in it. I think there’s something of value here. We don’t presume to be counted among the greatest wordsmiths of all time, but perhaps if you give us the chance, we can move you. Perhaps our words can even touch you, make you cry, laugh, think. We love literature just as much as you do (dare I say: maybe more?) and we want to show you what four or more years of studying this stuff can mean. So take a look, read a piece or two, and please, don’t judge us too harshly. We’re just trying to admire literature in the best way we know how. -Jordan Schotz
